A Lifetime of Service: Celebrating 60 Years Since the Ordination of Dr D'Arcy Wood
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the ordination of Rev. Dr Harold D'Arcy Wood, one of the most respected theologians, church leaders and ecumenists in the history of the Uniting Church in Australia.
Across six decades of ministry, Dr Wood has helped shape the life, worship and identity of the Church, leaving a legacy that continues to influence generations of ministers and members across Australia.

Ordained in 1966 in the Methodist Church, Dr Wood's ministry has spanned a period of profound change in Australian Christianity, including the formation of the Uniting Church in Australia in 1977. Throughout that journey, he has been a steadfast advocate for Christian unity, theological reflection and faithful discipleship.
Few people have done more to help generations of Uniting Church members understand and live out the vision of the Basis of Union, the foundational document of the Church. Through his teaching, preaching and writing, Dr Wood became one of its foremost interpreters, helping the Church appreciate both its theological depth and its continuing relevance.
His influential book, Building on a Solid Basis, remains one of the most significant guides to understanding the Basis of Union. Through his ministry, Dr Wood consistently emphasised that the councils of the Church are called not merely to make decisions but to prayerfully discern together the will of God.
His influence extended well beyond theological scholarship. Dr Wood served as Moderator of the Synod of South Australia, President of the Australian Council of Churches, and President of the Sixth Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia from 1991 to 1994.
In each role he championed the Church's calling to be a "uniting" church. He encouraged deeper relationships between Christian traditions in Australia and around the world, believing that the formation of the Uniting Church was not the end of the ecumenical journey but part of Christ's ongoing call to unity.
Dr Wood's contribution also shaped the worship life of countless congregations. He served on editorial committees responsible for the Australian Hymn Book and Together in Song, resources that have enriched worship across denominations and generations.
As a lecturer at Parkin-Wesley College, he helped form future church leaders, combining academic rigour with a deep commitment to the mission of the Church. His influence continues to be felt through the many ministers, theologians and church leaders he taught and mentored.
In reflecting on the changes he witnessed during more than four decades of ordained ministry, Dr Wood spoke of both the challenges and opportunities facing the Church. He observed declining church attendance, fewer ordinations and growing pressures on congregations, while also celebrating the increasing contribution of lay people, the ordination of women and the growth of ecumenical cooperation between churches.

Born in Tonga to Methodist missionary parents, Dr Wood has maintained lifelong connections with the Pacific, reflecting the broad vision of faith and service that has characterised his ministry. His commitment to Christian witness, reconciliation and unity has earned respect both within Australia and internationally.
As the Church celebrates 60 years since his ordination, we give thanks for Dr D'Arcy Wood's extraordinary ministry. His teaching, leadership and interpretation of the Basis of Union have helped successive generations understand the foundations upon which the Uniting Church continues to build.
Six decades after his ordination, Dr Wood's witness continues to inspire the Church to pursue thoughtful theology, faithful discipleship and the unity to which Christ calls all God's people.
