700 Fijian voices unite for climate justice in Fremantle

Fijian national conference call for climate justice Oct 26

More than 700 members of the Uniting Church’s Fijian National Conference have joined their voices in a powerful call for climate justice from Fremantle.

At the conclusion of the four-day conference, delegates unfurled a huge“Climate Justice Now” banner, standing in solidarity with Pacific churches and communities and calling on Australia to listen to Pacific leadership ahead of COP31.

The action came on 4 October as Christians worldwide marked the conclusion of the Season of Creation, a global ecumenical season of prayer and action for creation. The 2026 theme,“Living Water”, draws on Ezekiel 47 and its vision of life-giving waters bringing healing and renewal.

Chair of the Fijian National Conference, Rev Viniana Rokomasi Ravetali, said climate change was already having profound impacts across the Pacific.

“Climate change is not a distant or abstract concern for Pacific peoples. Its impacts are being experienced in our communities now,” she said.

Pacific communities are confronting rising seas, coastal erosion, threats to food and water security, damaged livelihoods and displacement. The Conference called for stronger climate finance and responses to loss and damage, while affirming the leadership of Pacific women, young people and communities.

Rev Ravetali said the Fremantle gathering was united in hope and solidarity as the pre-COP31 meetings commence in Fiji and Tuvalu.

“From Fremantle to Fiji, Tuvalu and across the Blue Pacific, we stand together in hope. Our message is simple: Climate Justice Now.”
