Assembly Finance, Audit and Risk Committee (AFARC)
Uniting Church in Australia (National Assembly)
Initial three-year term
AFARC is seeking an experienced governance professional to join the Committee for an initial three-year term. AFARC provides independent oversight of finance, audit and risk for the National Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia. Members may serve up to a maximum of nine years (three terms).
We welcome applications from people with strong skills and experience in accounting, financial management, governance and/or risk management. Candidates do not need to be members of the Uniting Church, and detailed knowledge of the Church’s structure is not required – this can be learned in the role. Up to two committee members may be non-members of the Church.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to strong governance in a significant national faith-based organisation that serves communities across Australia.

Key Responsibilities
AFARC’s responsibilities include oversight of:
- External reporting and compliance with applicable legislation, standards and best practice
- Financial management, including budgets, policies, and management reporting
- External and internal audit and controls
- Risk management policy, systems and oversight
- Other activities requested by the Assembly Standing Committee or the President of the Assembly
Attributes and Eligibility
Committee members are expected to:
- Act in the interests of the Assembly as a whole
- Contribute time and expertise to fulfil Committee responsibilities
- Bring experience in governance, strategic planning, financial or risk management appropriate to an organisation of comparable complexity
- Have relevant professional qualifications and/or experience
Additional requirements:
- Not be an employee of the Assembly or its agencies
- Not simultaneously sit on the Assembly Investment Committee
- The role is voluntary; reasonable travel and accommodation costs are reimbursed
Time Commitment:
- Four in-person meetings per year (typically Monday 10am–3pm, in Sydney or Canberra)
- Approximately three additional online meetings of 1–2 hours each
