2024-2025 Uniting Church Lectionary released
The Assembly has released the 2024-2025 Uniting Church Lectionary, a key resource for preaching and worship leading in the 'Year of Luke'
October 30, 2024
The 2024-2025 Uniting Church Lectionary is now available to download from the Assembly, and available to order from Wayzgoose, the new online store for MediaCom and Uniting Church resources. With some of the functions previously undertaken by MediaCom Education moving elsewhere, the 2024-2025 Lectionary has been produced by the Assembly's Transforming Worship Circle in partnership with Wayzgoose.
The new-look resource features a number of changes. It is in a new poster format with additional liturgical colour coding. It includes new listings for Uniting Church special days. The list of resources and commentaries is now hosted online and accessible by QR code.
The Assembly is very grateful to the Transforming Worship Circle for their work and to the team at Wayzgoose for their diligent design and printing services.
What is a lectionary?
The lectionary offers four readings from Scripture designed to be used as the basis for weekly preaching and worship. The Uniting Church in Australia promotes the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), which follows a three-year repeating cycle.
"The lectionary encourages us to connect the stories of our lives to the story of God’s faithful throughout Scripture," writes Circle Advocate Matthew Julius. "These texts are not simply offered to focus our sermons, but also to shape our prayers and liturgy and song."
"Lectionaries offer us a sign of unity with other churches who share in the same readings week by week. At the same time, the RCL often omits stories about women, and more difficult texts within Scripture. Local leaders should consider making sure the full witness of Scripture is heard across the life of the community."
The Year of Luke
Uniting Church President Rev Charissa Suli writes in the introduction:
"The Gospel of Luke invites us into a unique and profoundly compassionate vision of Christ’s ministry—a vision that speaks especially to the lost, the marginalised, and the least among us. We see Jesus fulfilling a radical mission of liberation, with salvation woven as an inclusive hope for all people."
"Some of the most beloved parables and stories are found uniquely in Luke: the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, the lost coin, the annunciation to Mary, and the shepherds who visit the newborn Jesus. Each of these stories holds a mirror to our own lives, challenging us to see Christ in the stranger, to forgive unconditionally, to celebrate the return of the lost, and to find God in the ordinary."
"As we journey through this liturgical year, may Luke’s witness inspire us to embody and weave Christ’s love that knows no bounds, welcoming all with the same compassion, justice, and joy that Jesus embodied."
This leaflet is available to order in printed form from Wayzgoose. A PDF can be downloaded below.
