March 5, 2025
Rev Charissa Suli, President of the Uniting Church in Australia, has shared this message and prayer with the Church as communities in south east Queensland and northern New South Wales anticipate the impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The category two cyclone is expected to make landfall tomorrow (Thursday) or Friday morning, bringing damaging wind gusts, storms, and heavy rainfall.

Siblings in Christ,
As Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of south east Queensland and northern New South Wales. We know the fear, the uncertainty, and the weight of waiting for what is to come. But we also know this: even in the storm, God is with us.
We begin the season of Lent today—a time of reflection, endurance, and hope. Lent reminds us that after every wilderness, there is renewal; after every trial, there is resurrection. As communities in Queensland and northern New South Wales prepare for the storm, may we hold onto the promise that no darkness lasts forever and no struggle is beyond God’s redeeming love.
Let us turn our hearts to God in prayer.
Loving and faithful God,
In this season of Lent, as we journey through reflection and renewal, we face a different kind of wilderness—the coming storm. We lift up to You the communities in the path of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Surround them with Your protection. Shelter the vulnerable, calm the anxious, and strengthen the weary.
We pray for the first responders, community leaders, and all who are working to keep others safe. Grant them wisdom and resilience. May neighbours look out for one another, and may kindness rise even in the face of uncertainty.
Lord, just as Lent leads us to Easter morning, may this storm give way to brighter days. When the winds settle and the waters recede, may we emerge safely and with renewed hearts—more compassionate, more united, and more aware of Your presence in our lives.
We trust in Your mercy, Lord, and we rest in Your peace.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
In anticipation of the cyclone's impact later this week, the Uniting Church Assembly is preparing information about how people can contribute toward disaster relief efforts. Check back on this page over the coming days, or contact comms@nat.uca.org.au
