Uniting Church in Australia Assembly
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Act2 Project is a major whole-of-Church change project led by the Assembly focused on discerning and deciding on the future of the Uniting Church. As a Church we are living through a time of change, opportunity and challenge. We are not the Church we were at the time of Union in 1977. The size, shape and demographics of our Church have changed. The society in which we participate in God’s mission has also changed. Our structures, practices and culture need to change too.
The purpose of this position is to support the work of the Commission for Governance, Resourcing and Administration in the next phase of the work of the Act2 Project building on the work of the previous phase (2022-24) based on the decisions of the 17th Assembly particularly: C. Sharing Our Common Life and Wealth.
Key areas of responsibility include:
Functional Leadership
- To offer leadership in the Stream C work of next phase of the Act2 Project based on the decisions of the 17th Assembly.
- To act as the Executive Officer to the Governance, Resourcing and Administration Commission.
- To consult and work collaboratively with other members of the team, other parts of the Assembly, Synod bodies and staff members, members and bodies of the wider Uniting Church to deliver on the Act2 Project.
- To share in representing the overall life and mission of the Uniting Church, and the Assembly in general, to the wider Church.
Thought Leadership
- Design, implement and review changes to systems, policies, procedures and processes for all areas of responsibility, or when requested to do so.
CORE COMPETENCIES
Within the National Assembly, the Executive Officer will be required to demonstrate the following competencies:
- Demonstrates UCA knowledge and commitment – Understands the Church and takes pride in their own role and the mission of the Church. Has experience in the Uniting Church and an understanding of its theology, polity, practices and culture. Works to achieve the goals of the project.

- Focuses on service - Demonstrates commitment to providing outcomes for the Assembly that contributes to the mission of God in all parts of the UCA.
- Drives improvements and solutions – Carries out systematic and rational analysis to identify the root cause of problems. Makes informed judgments. Anticipates and prevents recurring problems. Creates improvements and puts forward ideas for better work practices. Project management skills and experience.
- Builds and leverages relationships – Works with others, across boundaries, to achieve objectives and help colleagues succeed. Builds strong relationships by respecting diversity and supporting and encouraging others. Experience in change management and/or people leadership.
- Communicates effectively – Communicates clearly and confidently. Influences through engaging others. Listens actively, while shaping conversations to ensure focus and understanding. Adapts communication style and medium to suit the situation and the audience.
- Demonstrates personal excellence – Acts with integrity. Protects sensitive information. Remains positive in the face of setbacks and obstacles. Understands own strengths and limitations and is focused on self-development. Lives out the Assembly values of respect, compassion, hope, justice, integrity and innovation.

POSITION SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / QUALIFICATIONS / WORK EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL:
- Expertise and experience in project management and change management.
- Outstanding communication skills (verbal, visual and written) and experienced at collaboration between multiple stakeholders.
- Skills and expertise in areas of leadership, governance and change management.
- Experience in working collaboratively within and with Councils of the Church and Committees.
- Experience working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams.
- High level capacity in using contemporary communication technologies.
- Demonstrated strategic thinking.
