Pastoral Statement: Declaration of martial law in South Korea

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

The Uniting Church in Australia has been deeply concerned by news emerging from South Korea overnight as South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced he was imposing martial law. The declaration plunged the nation into chaos as the military was deployed and prompted shock, anger and protests. The South Korean National Assembly later voted unanimously to withdraw the martial law, and the decision was passed. As of now (4 December 2024), martial law has been officially lifted.

In these troubling times, we lift up our Korean brothers and sisters in prayer and solidarity. These events weigh heavily on our hearts. The Uniting Church holds a deep and enduring relationship with Korea, rooted in the courageous mission of Australian Christians in our tradition who first journeyed to Korea with the Gospel. This connection continues today, especially through the vibrant Korean communities within the Uniting Church, who enrich us with their faith and witness.

As President, I affirm the long-standing commitment of the Uniting Church to peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula. On the 70th anniversary of the Korean War, we joined the global call for peace, and we continue to advocate for the restoration of justice, the protection of human dignity, and the building of bridges where there are divides.

To our Korean community here in Australia and across the diaspora: we see your pain, your fear, and your longing for peace. Your global church family stands with you in this moment. We are reminded of Christ’s call to be peacemakers, not only in times of ease but in times of struggle. Together, we are bound by threads of love, weaving Christ’s peace and hope across cultures and boundaries.

I call on leaders in South Korea to listen to the cries of the people and seek pathways of dialogue and justice. I call on our faith communities to hold steadfast to prayer, trusting that God’s Spirit can move in even the most complex and difficult situations.

Prayer for Korea

Gracious and Loving God,

We come before You with heavy hearts for the people of Korea. In this time of uncertainty and fear, we pray for Your peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding.

Grant wisdom and compassion to the leaders of South Korea as they face decisions that affect so many lives. May they be guided by justice and a deep care for the dignity of all people. For those living in fear or struggling under the weight of conflict, we ask for Your comfort and strength. Surround them with Your loving presence.

We lift up the Korean diaspora around the world, including our brothers and sisters in the Uniting Church. May they find solace in their faith communities and courage to be voices for peace and reconciliation. Help us all, as Your church, to stand in solidarity and weave threads of love that bind us together across nations and cultures.

We pray for healing where there is division, understanding where there is discord, and hope where there is despair. Transform hearts and minds, Lord, and lead us all into the light of Your peace.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

호주연합교회는 어젯밤 한국에서 전해진 소식에 깊은 우려를 표합니다. 윤석열 대한한국 대통령이 계엄령을 선포하였다는 소식에 우리는 충격과 불안을 느꼈습니다. 군이 동원되고, 국민들의 분노와 항의가 일어났습니다. 그러나 이후 한국 국회는 만장일치로 계엄령 철회를 결의했고, 현재 (2024년 12월 4일) 계엄령은 공식적으로 해제되었습니다.

이 어려운 시기에 우리는 한국의 형제자매들을 위해 기도하며 연대의 마음을 함께 합니다. 이 사건은 우리의 마음에 깊은 무게를 지우고 있습니다. 호주연합교회는 한국과 오랜 역사를 공유하고 있습니다. 호주 기독교인들이 복음을 들고 용기 있게 한국으로 선교의 발걸음을 내디딘 그 전통이 오늘날까지 이어지고 있습니다. 특히, 교회 내 한국 공동체들은 그들의 신앙과 증언을 통해 우리에게 큰 영적 풍요로움을 더해 주고 있습니다.

저는 한국전쟁 70주년을 맞이하여, 우리 교회가 한국 평화와 화해를 위한 변함없는 헌신을 이어가고 있음을 다시 한번 말씀드립니다. 우리는 세계와 함께 평화를 위한 목소리를 높였고, 정의 회복과 인간 존엄성 보호, 그리고 갈등을 넘어서는 교두보를 놓기 위한 노력을 지속하고 있습니다.

호주와 전 세계에 있는 한인 공동체 여러분, 우리는 여러분의 아픔과 두려움, 그리고 평화를 향한 갈망을 함께 느낍니다. 전 세계 교회 가족이 이 순간 여러분과 함께하고 있습니다. 그리스도께서 우리에게 말씀하신 평화의 일꾼이 되어야 한다는 부르심을 기억하며, 우리는 어려움 속에서도 함께 사랑과 희망을 나누고, 문화와 경계를 넘어 그리스도의 평화를 전하는 삶을 살아가고 있습니다.

저는 한국의 지도자들에게, 국민들의 목소리에 귀 기울여 대화와 정의의 길을 모색할 것을 촉구합니다. 또한, 우리의 신앙 공동체가 기도 안에서 굳건히 서며, 하나님의 성령께서 복잡하고 어려운 상황 속에서도 일하실 것을 믿고 기도해 주시기를 바랍니다.

대한한국을 위한 기도

자비와 사랑의 하나님,

우리는 한국의 백성들을 위해 무거운 마음으로 기도합니다. 불확실하고 두려운 이 시간에, 하나님의 평화를 주시기를 기도합니다. 그 평화가 모든 이해를 초월하는 평화가 되게 하소서.

한국의 지도자들에게 지혜와 자비를 허락하시어, 수많은 생명에 영향을 미치는 결정을 내릴 때 정의와 사람들의 존엄성을 깊이 헤아리게 하소서. 두려움 속에서 살아가거나 갈등의 무게에 짓눌려 있는 이들에게 위로와 힘을 주시고, 하나님의 사랑으로 그들을 둘러싸 주소서.

전 세계에 흩어진 한국 디아스포라와 그리스도 안에서 하나 된 우리의 형제자매들이, 평화와 화해를 위한 목소리를 높이며 믿음의 공동체 안에서 위로를 찾고 용기를 얻을 수 있도록 도와주소서. 우리가 하나님의 교회로서 연대하며, 사랑의 실을 엮어 국가와 문화를 넘어 함께 서게 하소서.

분열된 곳에 치유가 있기를, 불화의 곳에 이해가 있기를, 절망의 곳에 희망이 있기를 기도합니다. 하나님, 우리의 마음과 생각을 변화시켜 주시고, 모두가 하나님의 평화의 빛 안으로 이끌려 가게 하소서.
