National Floods Appeal
Uniting Church President Rev Sharon Hollis has launched a national appeal to support communities across Australia impacted by flooding.
Victoria continues to be engulfed by flooding this week with flash flooding inundating homes and businesses in Melbourne.
People have been evacuated or placed on alert in other parts of the state, with major flooding of the Murray River around Echuca, and flooding expected in Swan Hill, East Gippsland on high alert and the risk of flooding in the Snowy River.
Tens of thousands have been impacted by the flooding in Victoria in the past two weeks. In Shepparton and Mooropna, hundreds of properties were damaged leaving many homeless.
At the same time, communities in NSW have been impacted by the extreme weather with thousands evacuated in Moree and the Northern Rivers region facing the threat of flooding again.
Record rain in Tasmania has also caused major damage to properties in the northwest and parts of Queensland and South Australia experienced heavy rainfall.
The President is encouraging congregations, faith communities and people to consider donating to the National Disaster Relief Fund to support projects and assistance to affected communities in the long term.
“We pray for all people impacted by the recent floods and those who are coming alongside them to provide immediate relief and care.”
“We know that recovery from natural disasters takes time, time to rebuild both physically and emotionally. Long term recovery assistance is a key focus for the National Disaster Relief Fund.”
Since the last Appeal in March, the National Disaster Relief Fund has helped to fund:
- the first interstate chaplaincy deployment from Victoria to communities impacted by the flooding emergency in NSW in Mark
- ongoing pastoral support to communities impacted by bushfires in Victoria,
- a food-relief project for people made more vulnerable by natural disasters in Queensland.
