In 2016 John was appointed the Executive Officer of the Uniting Church’s National Task Group focussed on the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. His insight, commitment and expert guidance were central to our response and engagement.
As the inaugural Director of the National Safe Church Unit, launched in 2019, John led an effective team collaborating across the Uniting Church in its work to apply the learnings and recommendations of the Royal Commission. Always grounded in our commitments and identity as a Christian community, the National Safe Church Unit has resourced the Uniting Church with frameworks, policies, practices and training.
John’s leadership has been integral to developing a national approach by which the whole Uniting Church could grow and sustain a culture of safety.
Across these two vital roles he has led with wisdom, integrity and humility.
“John has been a passionate advocate for our call to be a safe church,” said Rev Lindsay Cullen, Assembly General Secretary (Interim). “He has urged us to see these commitments as an expression of God’s love and integral to how we shape our life as the Uniting Church.”
“His faithful leadership will be greatly missed and we pray God’s blessings on his next steps.”
