'This heavy head of Christ': an Easter meditation
Written by Rev Alex Sangster, Transforming Worship Circle Advocate
This heavy head of christ,
Weight of world has brought you down
And we are sorry
that we fell asleep
in all those boats
and while you prayed
and while you wept.
And we are sorry
that we said
we did not know you
Over and over again
Good Friday is hard but not as hard as Easter Saturday.
Nobody likes to wait
And the shock is still in our systems
And the trauma plays like a slow and shuddering film before
our eyes
and we ask
how long
dear friend
how long
before you come home
to us
and to your grieving world?
How long…
till this Easter Saturday
(which was birthed so long ago)
at least a year (we say)
when this plague came here
to stay
and when we all hid in our upstairs rooms…
and whispered to each other across the zooms.
This heavy head
weight of world
has brought us down
And so
we watch and wait
we watch and pray
Will you come back to us
our love
on Easter day?
