The Uniting Church continues to call on the Australian Government to take further action in response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
We have joined calls for Australia to implement a special humanitarian intake to provide safety for people at risk of danger and violence, and permanent protection for those in Australia.
There are a number of advocacy opportunities this week for people to support:
Calling Party #ActionForAfghanistan, Thursday 30 September 2021 at 1pm (AEST) - The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre is hosting a calling party via Zoom. After a briefing on the current state of play participants will make calls to government ministers calling on them to implement a substantial resettlement plan for people from Afghanistan. Sydney Alliance MP Action for Afghanistan - Sydney Alliance is calling on its members to organise delegations to visit local MPs calling on the Federal Government to match the Canadian intake of 20,000 refugees from Afghanistan among a number of other asks. A briefing will be held on Wednesday 28 September 5.30pm. Hear from local Afghan-Australian leaders. Find out more
National Week of Action for Afghanistan 27 September to 1 October - The Week of Action includes daily events and actions that you can join to help build pressure on the Government to act. There will be videos to share, briefings on meeting your local MP, a calling party, and one last push to get the petition over 200,000 signatures before Friday
