We are a close-knit community church located in the northern suburbs of Darwin. Most of our services are conducted in Bahasa Indonesia, with English translations provided on-screen and in our weekly liturgy booklet for those who prefer a printed copy. Every six weeks, our young members lead the service in English – their energy and joyful singing are always a highlight!
Three thriving Sunday school classes take place during our 9.30am service, welcoming around 30 children aged 2 to 15, along with a small group of young adults. Our congregation is primarily made up of individuals aged 30 to 50, complemented by our beloved senior members.
There have been many special moments in the life of our church this year. A number of our youth participated in curriculum and lessons to learn the foundations of their Christian faith in the weeks prior to Easter. Three students were confirmed during the Palm Sunday service. This was a very encouraging and meaningful time with many people attending the service and a fabulous lunch and fellowship afterwards.
Easter is always a solemn reflection time for our congregation with the traditional Maundy Thursday foot washing service followed by the Good Friday Stations of the Cross re-enactment and communion service sitting as Christ did with His disciples at the table. The Sunday Dawn service was combined with the Nightcliff Uniting Church congregation and conducted on the foreshore at Rapid Creek overlooking the sea. It is always a beautiful service as the sun comes up. A breakfast of hot cross buns, sausages and Indonesian snacks followed by dancing, children’s games and fun and fellowship always rounds off the day.
A visiting minister, Ps Yandi from Kupang was invited to revive our faith with an interesting and amusing service for all the Christian community in Darwin. We were grateful that we were able to use the Memorial Uniting Church for this event.
Challenges for us are with keeping our traditions while also acknowledging change and maintaining relevance for our younger generation who were born or grew up in Australia and do not have the same connection as the adults with Indonesia.
We ask that you join us in praying for the older members of our congregation as they develop more health issues which prevents them from being able to attend church. May we reach out to them in other ways so they can still hear the word of God.
