Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress

28     Day of mourning

That the Assembly resolve:

To request members to support a Day of Mourning to occur on the Sunday prior to 26th January each year, and to engage during worship services in activities such as reflection and discussion of the profound effect of invasion and colonisation on First Peoples.

Proposer:

Garry Dronfield

Seconder:

Dianne Torrens

Rationale:

In 1997, the Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia resolved (Minute 97.33.18) to support changing the date of Australia Day. This resolution was reaffirmed in 2000 (Minute 00.11.06), when the Church also resolved to call on the Federal Government to establish a consultative body to work towards a treaty with the First Peoples of this land (Minute 00.11.05).
